Syd Gardiner – City of Cornwall

If elected, would you make climate action a priority, and if so, how would you ensure that state-of-the art-energy reduction methods are included in the assessment of all municipal activities, spending and investments – both capital and on-going management?
  • Climate change is and has been a priority of mine as global warming will effect not only my children but my grandchildren’s futures. from better insulation in municipal and private homes to solar energy, including geo-thermal heating it is in my view a responsibility of city leaders to support and invest in.
Do you think your main streets/downtown are successful – why or why not?  If elected, what specific actions, changes and improvements would you make to ensure they are healthy and successful?
  • Yes to successful down town however we need to eliminate paid parking to encourage shoppers to buy downtown. We must also rid Pitt streets one way including other major arteries. Encourage citizens to use public transit. As one who uses a bicycle we need to improve the safety of users by putting up pontoons as they do in some Quebec Municipalities to separate gas vehicles from cyclists.
If elected, how would you go about ensuring the replacement of tree cover lost in your municipality as a result of the Emerald Ash Borer?
  • A trip to my home in Riverdale will quickly show the importance I hold for trees and the environmental affect they have. I have fourteen trees which produce oxygen and rid carbon dioxide. During my last term of Council, I suggested replacing Emerald Ash borer with fruit trees which would also provide fruit needed in not well to do families with healthy choices.
If elected, what waste management initiatives would you support toward increasing waste diversion and what targets would you like to set for your municipality?
  • The blue box initiative should be enhanced by also recycling food scraps. Having been on Council previously, I supported the long term plan on waste reduction and will continue to do so.
