Cedars are long-lived, hardy evergreen trees. This is a great tree to plant if you love wildlife since animals are attracted to cedar trees for food and shelter. They produce natural oils that are toxic to insects and fungus. The natural oils also have a very pleasant aroma. First Nations peoples call the cedar the Tree of Life for providing so many uses; canoes, baskets, medicines, boxes, clothing, walls and roofing, as well as furniture and musical instruments.
