Alex de Wit – City of Cornwall

If elected, would you make climate action a priority, and if so, how would you ensure that state-of-the art-energy reduction methods are included in the assessment of all municipal activities, spending and investments – both capital and on-going management?
  • I would make climate action a priority as it is a priority in my life. However, at this point, I do not know how this priority will translate into policies within the City of Cornwall. If elected, I will make a commitment to request reporting from City Staff and administration concerning environmental impact and climate issues whenever appropriate, and will consider these issues when making my decisions.
Do you think your main streets/downtown are successful – why or why not?  If elected, what specific actions, changes and improvements would you make to ensure they are healthy and successful?
  • I think that the downtown streets are successful in Cornwall but that there is always room for improvements. There are several vacant buildings on our main streets that I believe we can work to ensure are occupied. In order to achieve this goal, I believe that our existing relevant policies should be reviewed and we should investigate options like tax credits for businesses on the main streets as incentives.
If elected, how would you go about ensuring the replacement of tree cover lost in your municipality as a result of the Emerald Ash Borer?
  • I would consult with experts in the field and base my opinions and my votes on their recommendations provided that those recommendations are within budget.
If elected, what waste management initiatives would you support toward increasing waste diversion and what targets would you like to set for your municipality?
  • I would encourage a (garbage) bag limit similar to the one already proposed by the City of Cornwall and would focus planing and marketing dollars on educational issue in order to encourage more recycling and composting as well as the rejection of high waste goods. I believe this has to be a long term plan that significantly reduces waste in a meaningful and long lasting fashion. This may be an uphill battle as there are still many people and companies in or community that do not yet appreciate the need to reduce our waste. However, I think that the goal of significantly reducing our waste and our landfill usage can be achieved.
