Kingston City Council Refuses to Backpedal

In the summer of 2013, the City of Kingston approved a motion to construct a 1.7km stretch of designated bike lanes on the busy (and congested) Princess Street.   The project will see the removal of a number of on street parking spaces and this has stirred up quite a bit of controversy.  A motion was put forward to re-open the debate – basically, some folks are convinced that the new bike lanes will affect business on Princess Street.  This is an argument that is often heard in the debate against removing parking spaces and adding in bike lanes but is it really a valid one?
It seems that it isn’t.  A recent article published in the Atlantic Cities reveals bike lanes do not negatively impact business.  In fact, it seems removing parking and adding bike lanes either means business as usual or in some circumstances even an increase.  Plus, removing parking reduces congestion on the road and allows for a better and safer flow of different types of transportation (including walking and cycling)!
However, we are happy to report that Kingston City council was not swayed by the naysayers and voted in favour of moving forward with the building of new designated bike lanes!!  A small but important victory in favour of more sustainable and active forms of transportation.
